House Boat is a country craft better known as “Kettuvallom” in Malayalam language. These boats were used for the transportation of goods from the isolated villages to the towns in the yester years. With the emergence of more sophisticated transportation, this became less popular. Now these ‘Kettuvalloms’ are back again as a major tourist attraction with lots of modification in the architecture. Its is about 70 feet long and has a width about 14 feet in the middle and tapers at the ends

All these ‘Kettuvalloms’ are being made out of wood, bamboo mats, mambo poles, coir, coconut fibre, coir mats etc. The main wood used to manufacture is Arotocarpus. A small  engine generally powers the House boats.

The boats are fully furnished to attract the tourists. Having single apartment for two persons and twin apartment for four persons. Apart from furnishing they have sun bathing deck, a spacious lining room with front view, comfortable bamboo chairs suitable for chitchat, a well built kitchen, and European model toilets for the convenience of the tourists. Traditional l lanterns or electrical lights are using the lights for illumination, some boats having air conditioned rooms. Each houseboat has three crew members. The cook prepares fresh food onboard the cuisine includes traditional Kerala flavors along with local specialties
